George Frederick Handel’s opera Riccardo Primo was for a long time neglected unfairly. However, she is one of his best works in terms of orchestration, characterization of roles, musical spectrum and beauty. Conductor Paul Goodwin and the Basel Chamber Orchestra, performing on historical instruments, have recorded this reference recording of the work, together with outstanding soloists Lawrence Zazzo, Nuria Rial, Geraldine McGreevy, David-Wilson Johnson, Tim Mead and Curtis Streetman, for the first time on the new critical edition based on the Halle Handel Edition. The live performances preceding the studio recording in Basel, among others at the Halle Handel Festival, have already received the highest praise from the press.
“Handel – happiness at its finest: the soloists demonstrate by example how coloratura sovereignty can go hand in hand with creative power – reference quality!” Frankfurter Rundschau.
